In the pursuit of some healthier options, we’ve modified our fruit and yogurt parfaits to have plain Greek yogurt, berries and a drizzle of organic honey. Of course we still have granola on the side! It’s been a huge hit so far - pop in and try one!
It’s been a long week filled with trying to trust untrustworthy people and all the doubts that come along with those types of choices. As I am wondering how reckless I must be to allow these broken people around our business and family, just perfectly on cue, I found this balloon tucked away in a cabinet. Our 7 year old wrote on it at Andy’s memorial (but I wouldn’t let her release it with the rest because it’s bad for the fishies 🙈). It reminded me why we love the less-lovable. Andy helped us solidify our mission at Hanky Pies. He was our very first free coffee and came everyday for months. He helped bus tables and greet customers and refill sugar packets. He fell asleep by the fireplace and always asked about my kids. He joined our family for Easter dinner, constantly complimenting the cooking and finding ways to start relatable conversations with our parents. He brought cold, hungry people in to his little haven and freely shared his few precious dollars with others. When he passed, our kids mourned his death alongside us, and we know they’ll be better for it. He made a lasting impact on our family and our town, and we miss him terribly. As we search for wisdom and strength to love our community in some of the harder ways, we are reminded what joy we found when we opened our hearts to a lonely, homeless guy. Without your generosity, we wouldn’t have had this chance. Without your support of our little dream, our family wouldn’t have learned this invaluable lesson. We are so grateful and honored to be serving here. Here’s to a new week! 🎈
A follow up to our FB post about finding used needles in our bathroom: We’ve gotten so much feedback. Some encouraging. Some people were sad. Some were really helpful. Some suggest that we kick them all out. We’re not sure what the solution is yet, but we are certain that banishing anyone with addiction or mental illness isn’t going to work for us. We know some of you think us naive - and maybe we are a little, but we figure they deserve a conversation - that’s what we would do with anyone else. Or what we should do, at least. To have enough respect for people - even if they don’t deserve it - to attempt to resolve a problem and not discard them like waste. So in light of that, we’ve spent the last two days having hard, uncomfortable face-to-face conversations with a handful of our known users. We told them what happened, asked them to look at the faces of the kids playing and think about what nightmare could happen if a child came across their dirty needle. We looked in their eyes and they looked in ours. We spoke honestly and frankly - there was no sugar coating facts. Firm boundaries were set and their help enlisted in holding others accountable and spreading the word that we have zero tolerance for drug use at the shop - and will trespass anyone, which means no more free stuff. I don’t think it will solve our community’s drug problem - but it solved some things for me. It reminded me that these people are human. They have stories and families and hurting souls. It reminded me that without the chance for redemption from our mistakes, we’re all doomed. Loving people well means sometimes loving through discomfort. It’s not always easy, but sometimes it is. And just like the prettiest sunrise this morning reminded me, each day is new. We love and appreciate you people - each and every one of you. ❤️
